Residents from across Bolton are now being offered the chance to explore Rivington and beyond as a new bus service comes to the borough.

The 125R started operating on Sunday May 21 from Horwich Parkway, Middlebrook Retail Park and Rivington offering residents the opportunity to travel around the area.

The service will be operating every Sunday including Bank Holidays throughout the summer until Sunday October 29 - and, what's more, it's free.

Residents can discover the hidden paths and caves at Rivington, Terraced Gardens, climb the spiral stairs to the top of the Pigeon Tower or hike up to the top of Rivington Pike where on a clear day you can see as far as Blackpool Tower.

Or for those who would like to explore further on the 125, the service can be picked up at The Crown, Horwich, giving people the opportunity to travel to Preston, Chorley and Bolton with buses operating every half hour.

Or why not make the connection at Horwich Parkway railway station for train journeys to Preston and Manchester.

Former railway guard and signalman Paul Salveson said: “The new service is available for residents and visitors in the area and the main aim is we want to get people coming into Rivington and not having to be dependant on the car which is obviously a big problem particularly at weekends.

“We would love to run it seven days a week with certainly the interest there and you can get the train from Manchester or Bolton to Horwich Parkway and the bus is waiting for you.

“And at the same time, it is available for residents in the local area who might want to get to Horwich Parkway Station.

“So, it ticks a lot of boxes, and it is free.

“The service goes around Rivington and stops in the obvious places but if anybody wants to pop on, as long as it is safe to do so, they can just stick their hand out and the driver will stop for them.”

The new service has been funded by the South East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership.
